Road to Campus: Stanford’s student deaths raise questions about mental health services

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Stanford University student Neyaz ‘Nick’ Khosravani died by suicide in a campus residence in January, marking the third apparent suicide involving a Stanford student in the past eight months. His death has reignited questions about the mental health services available to students at the prestigious university and whether enough is being done to help those in need..

Khosravani, a 23-year-old senior majoring in economics, was found dead in Burbank House, a campus dormitory, on Jan. 17. His death came just over a month after a 19-year-old sophomore, Benjamin Fang, died by suicide in Burbank House on Dec. 4, 2022. And in May 2022, Katie Meyer, a star goalkeeper on the Stanford women’s soccer team, died by suicide in her campus dormitory..

These deaths have sparked concerns among students, faculty, and staff about the mental health resources available to students at Stanford. Some have questioned whether the university is doing enough to support students’ mental well-being, while others have called for increased funding for mental health services..

In the wake of Khosravani’s death, Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne sent an email to the campus community, expressing his condolences and acknowledging the need for more support for students’ mental health..
