Angela Bassett Wore ‘the Color of Royalty’ to the 2023 Oscars

As much as it may seem like the Marvel Cinematic Universe has taken over the , one place the comic book franchise had not yet conquered was the Academy Awards. That is, until Angela Bassett became the first actor to nab an Oscars nomination for a role in a Marvel movie.

Bassett, who was last nominated for an Oscar in 1994 for playing Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do With It, was nominated this year in the best-supporting-actress category for her portrayal of Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She was up against Kerry Condon, Jamie Lee Curtis, Stephanie Hsu, and Hong Chau.

As befitted her Oscar-nominated role, Bassett looked like a true queen on the red carpet. She did the thing in a brilliant lavender Moschino gown (which is, as her stylist Jennifer Austin put it on Instagram, “the color of ROYALTY”) that featured voluminous off-the-shoulder sleeves and a mermaid skirt ending in a plume of ruffles. The stunning diamond choker is from Bulgari, while the glamorous attitude is all Bassett.

“Happy Oscars Sunday Fashion Family..the day has arrived!!! Here comes the Queen Mother,” Austin wrote in her IG caption.
