By now everyone is well aware that Kim Kardashian wore Marilyn Monroe’s “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress to the Met Gala. Not only was the news leaked prior to fashion’s biggest night, but the reality star promptly gushed about her dangerous and outdated weight loss plan to fit into a dress that has been sitting in a Florida Ripley’s Believe It or Not for years.
But why wear one Marilyn Monroe gown (that’s technically off-theme for the Gilded Age event) when you can wear two? On May 6, Kardashian revealed that her Met Gala after-party dress is the same one Monroe wore to the 1962 Golden Globes, where the actor received the Henrietta Award for World Film Favorite. To complete the cosplay, Kardashian even held Monroe’s actual Golden Globe, which just so happened to belong to her florist. A sign! At least, according to Kardashian.
“To top off my night after The Met, I had the honor of changing into Marilyn Monroe’s Norman Norell dress that she wore to the Golden Globes in 1962,” Kim Kardashian captioned a series of photos that feature her and Monroe wearing the green sequined gown, which was owned by Julien’s Auctions. If you notice a difference in the dress’s silhouette, it’s because Monroe eschewed the armholes to wear the dress as a halter.
“Further into my research, I found out that the owner of the Golden Globe that she received that evening was [none] other than my florist @jeffleatham. I saw this all as a sign [of the] way that all of the stars aligned,” Kardashian continued. “It will forever be one of the greatest privileges of my life to be able to channel my inner Marilyn in this way, on such a special night. Thank you Julien’s Auction and Jeff for helping to make this memory possible.”

Yes, sometimes the stars simply align because you’re born to fill a late Hollywood icon’s shoes…as long as you’re also a billionaire with seemingly endless amounts of access to priceless pieces of fashion history.
