For Zoë Kravitz, This Is 34

Perennial cool girl Zoë Kravitz turned 34 in the most predictable Zoë Kravitz way: in Saint Laurent. Did it mean it we loved her classic black dress any less? Absolutely not.

The actor wore one of friend Anthony Vaccarello’s slinky halter gowns to the Saint Laurent Rive Droite party in Miami Beach, feting the launch of an exhibition cocurated by Madonna to mark the rerelease of her 1992 book, Sex. While the “Into The Groove” singer, whip in hand, did vamp chic in a blazer and fishnets, Kravitz relied on the innate sensuality of Saint Laurent’s designs to help her feel her best on her big day.

A blue mani was the perfect subtle contrast to that black draped halter dress with its floor-pooling hem.

Friends of the brand, including Hailey Bieber and Kate Moss, have been won over by Vaccarello’s recent fluid, floor-sweeping designs that spell out subtle sex appeal, but Kravitz has always loved this less-is-more, languid approach to getting dressed (unless she’s swathed in crystals and little else at the Met Gala, of course). Day-to-day, she lives in vests, silk skirts, and Mary Janes—which are elevated, of course, by the fact that those unassuming everyday staples are by The Row or her beloved YSL.

If this strong yet fragile evening wear sets the tone for the rest of her 30s, there’s no radical shift coming. Rather, Kravitz, all lit-from-within skin and tiny tattoos, is stripping things back to what serves her. This was a case of an outfit standing out for its sheer simplicity, and looking all the chicer for it. Thirty-four not only looks good on Kravitz but is a welcome reminder for anyone that true timeless fashion doesn’t have to be complicated.
