It’s a venting system that “adapts to your needs, creating more-breathable performance gear with on-demand ventilation,” we’re told. It uses moisture-reactive vents that “autonomously open and close upon sensing sweat against the body”.

The innovation will be available next month via the Nike Run Division Aerogami Jacket for women with a men’s version launching this autumn. The tech was developed by the Nike Explore Team (NXT) and the Nike Sport Research Lab (NSRL).

So how does it work? Tiny winged vents open as sweat builds against the skin, “allowing better airflow and for sweat to escape”. When the body cools down and sweat dries, the vents close again.

The capability comes from a moisture-reactive film applied to the vents that autonomously contracts and expands when it senses sweat against the body.

This new jacket has the venting system across the chest and back of the garment, two of the areas where runners heat up and sweat most.

And the company has studied the way different bodies do this so the vent placement varies between the women’s and men’s jacket to react to gender-specific needs. For instance, vents on the women’s jacket are around the area where a sports bra sits.

Given that sweating isn’t the only issue runners face, the jacket also features Storm
