How I know Katie Holmes has style? She wore gray sweatpants and Sambas—the most basic of outfits—and now I want to wear gray sweatpants and Sambas. In New York City over the weekend, the Dawson’s Creek actor, fashion icon, Glamour, and an expert at elevating even the most basic look wore the ultimate running-errands-but-IDGAF outfit…with a subtle but effective twist.
Holmes, spotted in the city’s NoHo neighborhood on Saturday, August 5, wore a pair of slightly baggy pale gray Alo sweatpants with a drawstring at the waist, which she paired with a slouchy white graphic tee.
Sounds simple enough, but it’s in the footwear that Katie Holmes gave her look the Katie Holmes spin: She wore Adidas tube socks pulled all the way up to the hem of the sweatpants, which were then hiked up above her ankles. She completed the look with black Adidas Sambas with white stripes. By letting her socks be the star, she added an interesting twist to her look and managed to participate in two trends that are taking over at the moment: Sambas are so popular right now they can be hard to find, while crew socks have been on the rise all summer.
To elevate the ensemble even further, Holmes wore cat-eye tortoiseshell sunglasses, thin layered necklaces, and a structured black handbag. She wore her brown hair down and pulled it to one side in tousled, beachy waves.

From a cashmere bra to kitten heels so small you can barely see them and the dreaded dress-over-jeans look, Katie Holmes is always wearing something people will talk about, both on red carpets and on grocery runs. This socks-over-sweatpants look is no exception.
